Parenting Ideologies

One issue that influenced all the mothers’ decisions regarding how long a leave to take was their parenting ideologies. I am using the term parenting ideologies to refer to the ideas and ideals they expressed about mothering and fathering. It was clear in the interviews that a considerable portion of the participants believed that the mother (simply because she was the mother/ female and not the father/male) should take the primary parenting role.
Those women who believed this were less likely to take a short leave and more likely to take an extended leave. A significant portion of the participants

    This amount is rather significant regardless of a family's yearly income, so it is absurd that mother’s are expected to be able to take off a year of work without pay and be financially stable to support a child. The argument against a mother’s lengthy maternity leave is the system of structured early education, but values across varying cultures place a lot of emphasis on the formative time spent between a mother and a child, all of which would be lost due to a mother returning to work shortly after giving birth. Once maternity leave was extended, it became evident that it was necessary to keep up with infant health.
