Parenting Classes: High School Edition If more high schools would provide parenting classes, students would be much more prepared for parenthood. Some people believe that these classes would have a cynical influence either because they think it is a waste of time, or they believe that the government will mandate how their children are raised. However, I believe that it would be a favorable experience simply because the younger a generation is taught, the more triumphant they will become as adults. Informing students about parenting will contain an enthusiastic long term outcome, and in the end, students will be able to function more preferably in society. Being informed of the behaviors of a child is essential in raising them. According to an article in "Time," many pediatricians support parenting classes as a way to reduce child abuse and neglect. They say some child abuse is the result of a lack of knowledge about child development. The classes teach students about how to respond to normal child behavior that can be frustrating, such as tantrums. Prepare Tomorrow 's Parents says it is important to reach students in their teen years, when their attitudes about children and discipline are still developing. (“Why Would Mandatory Parenting Classes in Schools Be a Good Idea?”) Although some people believe parenting classes in high school have a dismissive influence on students, I know learning about the experiences to come will only benefit the student and prepare them for future occurrences. It is human nature for people to have sexual intercourse. Our very existence depends on the reproduction of our species and we must continue to reproduce to keep humans from extinction. Between peer pressure and hormones, teenagers engage in sexual activities and experiment- sometimes at a very young age. Without the proper protection, sex can result in pregnancy and also STD’s if their sexual partner has one. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “STDs are common, especially among young people. There are about 20 million new cases of STDs each year in the United States, and about half of these are in people between the ages of 15 and 24.” (“CDC Fact Sheet: Information for Teens and Young Adults: Staying Healthy and Preventing STDs”). Young people are especially vulnerable to STDs due to lack of protection and responsibility versus an older individual who has more experience and approaches the situation more vigilantly. There are far more pros than cons regarding parenting classes in high school. Although the classes will show students the duties of becoming a parent, it may also provoke them to be experimental due to the presentation of contraceptives such as birth control or condoms.
