Parental Regulations Now, Healthier Children Later
“Mom! Can we buy this?” Like many other children, this was a go-to phrase of mine whenever I wanted something from the grocery store. More often than not, my mom would say no and I would have to put back the box of fruit snacks that I had originally grabbed. While I didn’t understand then, I understand now why my mom wouldn’t buy whatever I wanted. She being a nurse practitioner, knew exactly what to buy to keep my brother and I healthy, and junk food wasn’t going to keep us in shape. That kind of knowledge, knowing what is healthy vs. unhealthy for your child, is what all parents need to have when it comes to allowing their children to watch television or play on other devices. An Iowa State University Professor, Douglas Gentile, observed in a JAMA Pediatrics study that cutting down on screen time, will also increase your child’s performance in school, increase weekly sleep, decrease aggressive behavior, and increase good social behaviors (“Limiting Screen Time”). In the 2014 study, JAMA Pediatrics researchers analyzed the media habits of about 1,300 school children over the course of seven months (one full school year). Children and parents were surveyed about bedtimes, violent media exposure, screen time limits (if any), and behavior. Teachers commented on grades and in-class behavior while school nurses measured height and weight (“Protective Effects of Parental”). The researchers found that, “parental monitoring of media has protective effects on a wide variety of academic, social, and physical child outcomes” (“Protective Effects”).
