Summary Parenting is a difficult job, one that comes with a tremendous amount of responsibility. Parents must provide love, while being patient and understanding. One obligation parents must provide is teaching and guiding their children as they mature into adulthood (Gonzalez, 2002). The article clearly defined how a child’s education begins in the home, not the classroom. Parents and educators want the same things, for students to be successful at home and school. Parental involvement is a win-win situation. Parent involvement has been associated with school success, including lower rates of retention grades, lower dropout rates, higher on-time graduation rates, and higher rates of advanced placement classes (Braley, 2008). The instrument measured the level of parental involvement and how parents viewed their involvement in the school to impact their child’s success of failures. Included on the survey was one open ended question, to determine the validity of the survey and parental effort. Concerning specific ways in which parents are involved the highest response was with the item “I ask my child about his/her grades often.” Parents had the lowest agreement with ‘I participate in parental involvement activities in my child’s school.” (Braley, 2008). As the future generation our students, are witnessing parents who are too busy to become involved and children who cannot see purpose of graduating. The statistics are scary when looking into violence and the education system: Graduation rates were associated with positive public safety outcomes. Researchers have found that a 5 percent increase in male high school graduation rates would produce an annual savings of almost $5 billion in crime-related expenses. States that had higher levels of educational attainment also had crime rates lower than the national average. Nine out of the 10 states with the highest percentage of population who had attained a high school diploma or above were found to have lower violent crime rates than the national average, compared to just four of the 10 states with the lowest educational attainment per population (Sabal, 2007). Administrators must find ways to hold parents accountable for their children’s success. One thing I have always seen, if you feed them, they will come. Monthly dinners for family’s to become acquainted with the school and staff allow parents to feel that the environment is safe and one that is welcoming to all walks of lives.
