The starting time for most high schools is anywhere between 7 and 8 a.m., which is pretty early for kids between the ages 14 – 15 years old. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “Teens need about 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night to function best. Most teens do not get enough sleep — one study found that only 15% reported sleeping 8 1/2 hours on school nights.” Sleep is very important at this age and if these kids don’t get enough sleep, 7 a.m. in the high school cafeteria is like being on the set of amc’s The Walking Dead. Waking up when half of the day is gone is in these kids nature, it’s almost like they are nocturnal. Last school year I spent a least an hour everyday school was in session, trying to wake sleeping beauty, also known as my brother, for school. You would think that as a sophomore in high school he would be more than capable of getting himself up and ready for school on time, but wrong! If no one was home to literally drag him out of bed in the morning he would never make it to school on time. Being on time is a very important skill that everyone should have. Something as simple as being on time to school and to class, can prepare students for adulthood. As an adult there are many places you have to go that require you to be there at the scheduled time. For example, doctors’ appointments, doctors have a very tight schedule which require the patient’s to be on time in order for the doctor to stay on schedule. Also when you get a job you can’t just show up late every day and not become jobless. Being on time shows that you not only care about your own time but that you also consider other people’s time.
