Should Teens Be Allowed to Purchase Contraceptives Without Parental Consent? Three in ten teen American girls will get pregnant by the age of twenty which is approximately about 750,000 teen pregnancies every year, and one in four teens contract a sexually transmitted disease every year. With this being said there is a huge debate on whether teens should be allowed to purchase contraceptives without parental consent. Teens should be allowed to purchase these contraceptives due to the fact teens will continue to have sex with or without parental consent leading teens to put their health at risk, teens will turn to illegal options to receive them, and it helps people from low income families that can’t afford to go to a doctor to get them.

However, those who are supporting forcing teens to notify or get consent from their parents to “promote the best interests of young women and improve family communications” fail to realize they are stripping teens of their right of privacy which is unconstitutional. In France, the government pays for girls to have birth control without parental consent, and as the government pays for it, that adds another level of privacy. They are doing this because they believe it will “reduce the teen pregnancy rate” (Judy Molland) which they think is also due to “ignorance, taboo and lack of access to contraception” (Judy Molland). Knowing the importance and how effective they are is not something only parents should be knowledgeable about. Planned Parenthood is the largest provider of sex education throughout the United States and they say contraceptives, such as condoms, are very protective from HIV/AIDS. When using a condom during sex, it drastically provides safety from HIV/AIDS 10,000 times more, than not using one. Wouldn’t the parent of a sexual active teenager, want that, more than them not using anything at all? Also, people who are allergic to latex, cannot use that has an excuse not to use one; because there are latex free condoms available. Studies show that when teenagers are educated on safe sex, as well as abstinence, they are more likely to take their time before they have sex for the first time.
In 2012, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney debated over Planned Parenthood and defunding the organization. The scale of how many women use their services is large and Obama was against taking away the federal fund to keep it up and running. They give out sex education to about 1.5 million people a year. This also goes towards women who cannot afford the services of hospitals or any other organization.
