The parent involvement surveys consisted on 10 questions related to parent involvement including meetings, communications with classroom teachers, involvement in parent groups, volunteering, instructional and school policy, and being informed about their child’s education progress. The survey results were somewhat surprising as the parent involvement levels in the district were substantially lower in volunteering, involvement, visibility, and engagement of educational activities outside the home than was first predicted.
Survey results regarding visibility indicated that 53% of parents in grades 6th-12th either never met with their child’s teacher or did so less than twice per year. Survey results of parents visiting their child’s school were

    Often schools with increased poverty rates, as seen in Hartford, are given the unintentional role of disciplinarian over educator. By having the school staff direct the majority of its energy into keeping control over their students, even the most developed curriculums are not introduced to their full extent, delaying student achievement. As a remedy for the issue, an increase in parent involvement is pertinent to the transition to teachers’ increased expectations of students. At the start of every fall, each school should host an open house that provides resources for both the parents and students to become involved in their school and community.
