Parental Censorship Rights awards parents the ability to monitor their child’s exposure to today’s various types of media. The ability, from day one, to determine if the information will be appropriate for the age and maturity of their child. Parent’s initial right to teach, to inform, or decide for their child what they deem as age appropriate and responsible age of the child should not be scorned. There are crowds of people who would disagree with this right of the parent because some believe that information should be made free to all. It is the parent that should monitor their children’s progress and learning process from day one. I learned many things on the streets and at the voice of teachers that saw different views of those around me. My parents never knew I was exposed to these other views until I was at the age that I thought was too late for what my parents had to say. I thought I already knew what I needed to know. Today, parents are often under the impression their child is ok with the world around them when in fact some parents do not even know what world their child is exposed to. It is not only a right but a charge to the parents to be the first informants. Parents have the right to know and understand the violent intent, if illegal and/or harmful behavior is displayed, offensive language, nudity, and sexual content of any type of media. I was very open with my children as we talked about many comfortable and uncomfortable topics. I felt they were well prepared to take on their immediate society. Not because I instilled my views in them, but because I was the first, or one of the first, they conversed with each day. We no longer live in a world that shares the same values. A family’s values are the first the children should be exposed to, and then face their day with their own.
