Introduction
“Every day, law enforcement officers across America are called to respond to murders. Each homicide case is tragic, but there are few cases more heartrending and more difficult to understand than serial murder.” (Serial Murder. 2010, May 21) Men and women from all racial, ethnic backgrounds and socio-economic statuses have been found to be serial murderers.
Sexual offenses generate fear, disgust, and outrage within society and yet understanding the actions, motives, and reasons of sex offenders is often very complicated and beyond any logical person's comprehension or scope of reality. (White, John H. 2007). One of the main reason’s paraphilias is so hard to understand it that the sexual behaviors and actions are different for

It has also allowed the interview process to flow successfully. It can enable an offender to be less embarrassed about the nature of the crime, allow the suspect to feel less powerful because the individual realizes that the investigator has more knowledge about paraphilia then the suspect. It makes that suspect feel that the investigator may understand the behavior behind the acts that were conducted, and lastly, with the investigator’s knowledge about paraphilia it helps establish a rapport with the suspect, in turn, resulting in a productive …show more content…
There are many diagnoses that are not included or specific. Many of an individual’s recurrent, intense sexual urges and sexual fantasies involve clusters of behaviors. In turn, I think that there could be a possibility of dual diagnosis. One of the last weaknesses in this article was that “studies raised the possibility that some behavioral characteristics associated with autism may be implicated in the development of serial killers.” (White, John H. 2007. Pg. 1196) I do believe singling out autism it to board of a spectrum as autism itself is a very board disability. I do believe that this can fall into a category of a dual diagnosis from the DSM very easily. I believe that it is essential that when looking at cases that involve paraphilia it is important to remember one’s mental health

A lot of people want to blame the parents of the offenders, asking “what did you turn your child into?” 36% of serial killers were physically abused, 26% were sexually abused, and 50% were psychologically abused (Mitchell and Aamodt 45). Many people have logically come to the conclusion that just because someone is abused, it does not mean that they will become a serial killer; or even a murderer; which is true. In the general population (people who have never committed murder) only 6% are physically abused, 3% are sexually abused, and 2% are psychologically abused (Mitchell and Aamodt 45). The dramatic difference of abuse frequency between people who are serial killers and people who are not seems evident enough to support that serial killers are created.…

As stated above, paraphilias are quite chronic, with a necessity of minimum of two years of treatment. But even so, predicting treatment outcomes have come out to be quite difficult. According to Brannon, "Long-term treatment gains appear to require approaches that address the underlying dynamics that go beyond the simple paraphilia itself. The morbidity or mortality of a paraphilia depends on the act practiced, the comorbidity involved, the patient's cooperation with the therapist, and whether or not the legal system is involved." (2013) Simply put, in order to make a good prognosis, it is necessary for the patient to have a cooperative attitude, ordinary sex life, motivation and desire for self development, and voluntary and positive approach…

Paraphilic disorders are described as “sexual deviation syndromes characterized by aberrant sexual fantasies, urges, and /or behaviors” (Saleh & Berlin, 2003). There is a difference from those who have unusual sexual fantasies and/or desires while engaging in healthy sexual activities with a partner and those who are diagnosed with paraphilic disorder. Those who act upon their fantasies in a way that causes harm to themselves and others are diagnosed with paraphilic disorders. For example, someone who is diagnosed with a paraphilic disorder may participate in “exhibitionism, fetishism, frotteurism, pedophilia, or even voyeurism” to name just a few subtypes of this disorder (Kearney & Trull, 2015, pp. 337-343).…

I believe that if paraphilias is not dealt with accordingly and the person is not held accountable as soon as the act has been committed, it could escalate to not just an extensive prison sentence, but also the victimization of innocent people as well. If, for example, a woman is committing an act of exhibitionsm, she is attracting all the sex offenders and perverted guys who may take advantage of her and eventually may attempt to sexually assault her. That being said, diagnosing paraphilias, no matter which one it…

Autism and psychopathy have historically had several similar constituents that make up the diagnosis or label respectively. Comparably, autistic and psychopathic people both have a lack of social understanding albeit for different reasons. In autism, social cues are purely misunderstood or not comprehended whereas in psychopaths, they simply choose to ignore social cues and normalities (Brook et al., 2013; Howland, Kosson, Patterson, & Newman, 1993; Viding et al., 2014). Accordingly, psychopaths are defined as having a deficiency or absence of empathy and/or remorse.…
