The main character of William Faulkner’s A Rose for Emily, Emily Grierson, is unlike most people in Jefferson, Mississippi. It would appear that she may not be as mentally healthy as the rest of her neighbors, who have grown concerned as well as intrigued with their interesting neighbor. Miss Emily has paranoid schizophrenia because she shows a lack of emotions, isolates herself from her neighbors, and appears delusional. Paranoid schizophrenia is a mental disorder which can cause someone to confuse what is reality and what is fantasy.
