Paranasal sinuses are cavities in the bones of the face and skull base that are lined with mucous membranes respiratory which produces mucus (phlegm).
There are four steam sinuses:
- Maxillary (sinus in the upper jaw, teeth above and below the eyes)
- Ethmoidal (sinuses between the eyes on both sides of the nose)
- Anterior (frontal sinuses) and
- Sphenoid (sinuses behind the eyes, deep in my head).

The sinuses are linked with the nose through narrow openings through which mucus out of the sinuses and enter the air. When thick mucus or swelling of mucous membranes caused by infection, allergy or irritants lead to narrowing or complete blockage of these openings, there is inflammation of the sinuses (sinusitis or rhinosinusitis).
