Paramedics Essay

Paramedics are similar to EMTs where they both are quick responders to the sick and injured in emergencies. While responding, paramedics are able to bandage a wound, asses a patient’s condition and identify the path of treatment needed, provide first-aid and life support treatment, transport patients in an ambulance to a hospital, and report knowledge of the patient to the staff at the hospital. Some paramedics are able to work on a helicopter or airplane with the proper training and equipment. Paramedics are also trained to move patients to different hospitals that specialize in the treatment required for the patient. Also, if a patient has a contagious disease, the paramedics decontaminate the interior of the ambulance so that no other person gets the disease. Although paramedics are very similar to EMTs, paramedics require more training and education. Paramedics can provide more extensive pre-hospital care than EMTs. They can also give medicine orally and intravenously and interpret EKGs (electrocardiograms). After high school, those who are pursuing a position as a paramedic need an associates degree in emergency medical technology. After passing the EMT-basic and EMT-advanced level of education, paramedics must complete the most advanced level of education which is only required for those who want an occupation higher than the EMT positions.
