In the short story “The Dead” by James Joyce, we deal with theme of paralysis. The author shows the read that his characters are immobile individual who have no control of their lives. The title, “The Dead” in this context implies that the characters are not physically dead but inside they are emotionally dead. The title, shows the difference between how people in their society seem to be and who they actually are. Throughout the story there are a few characters at the party that seem to appear lively, but internally they are actually lifeless. We can see paralysis through the analysis of some of the characters most specifically Gabriel Conroy.
