Parallels Collide: ‘Captain Marvel’ Takes Half A ‘Wonder Woman’ Approach

When it comes to superhero flicks, there are bound to be some similarities. With Marvel announcing in 2016 they would be following DC’s lead in bringing one of its biggest female characters to the big screen, it’s hard not to look at the pre-production factors without finding some similarities. The Marvel heroine we’re talking about today is Carol Danvers a.k.a Captain Marvel. No, not DC’s Billy Baston also known as Shazam and Captain Marvel and certainly not the CW’s Supergirl who is known as Kara Danvers. No relation.

For anyone who might be unfamiliar with Carol Danvers, she was originally known as Ms. Marvel before she took on the mantle Captain Marvel from Mar-Vell

They first attempted to bring her into the second Avengers film, Age of Ultron. The idea was scrapped due to the fact they had to flesh out her backstory before they tried to introduce her. A second attempt was with the Netflix Marvel series, Jessica Jones where Jessica’s best friend was originally going to be Carol. This was ultimately changed to Trish Walker - better known as Patsy Walker in the comics. Additionally, Captain Marvel will receive her own film first before she entered the world of the Avengers in the yet-to-be titled fourth film. According to reports, Captain Marvel will be have a similar premise to DC’s Green …show more content…
For Carol, her mentor is Krell alien Mar-vell who goes by the human alias Walter Lawson.

Wonder Woman’s mentor is none other than her aunt Antiope, who serves as the leader of the Amazonian army. Antiope, unlike her sister and Diana’s mother, Hippolyta allows her niece freedom, something causes great concern for the Queen of the Amazons.
Screenwriters
Before any story can even become film, it needs to be written. For the Captain Marvel film, it will be written by three female screenwriters in the form of Meg LeFauve, Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

Wonder Woman was written by a male screenwriter in the form of Allen Heinberg. The sequel is reportedly being co-written by director Patty Jenkins.
Directors
No film can head in any form of direction without the leadership of a director. In terms of Captain Marvel, the film will be helmed by two independent filmmaking duo, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. This marks the first time a Marvel film has been helmed by a woman and a female (Boden) - male (Fleck) duo.

Wonder Woman was helmed by solely a woman in the form of Patty Jenkins who did an amazing job.

DC on the other hand, is all about the depressing highlights of the protagonist’s life, an example of this would be in the beginning of Batman VS Superman where it shows Batman's parents dying in slow motion and Superman's adopted father dying. Another thing that Marvel does is giving more backstory and insight into the antagonists and villains of their movies. An example of this would be Hela in the new Thor movie because Hela was trapped for a millenia and wants revenge for trapping her. She was imprisoned after her behavior was reinforced by her father, and while she goes about it in a way that most of us wouldn’t her reasons are very human and much easier to relate to. Another area where Marvel and DC usually differ is the nature of their villains.…

Superhero Comic Books Berlatsky’s article, “The Female Thor and the Female Comic-Book Reader” (2014), argues that girls are interested in reading superhero comics as much as boys; there has been a lot of speculation whether comic books were created to entertain only the masculine audience. In order to stop the sexism that has been going around in the superhero comic book industry, Berlatsky uses the logos Aristotelian appeal to inform the comic book audience that girls have been a fan of comics since decades ago. He also managed in using the hyperbole and aphorism rhetorical strategies to show that boys see girls differently and don’t belong in this industry. As a matter of fact, Berlatsky uses aphorism in one of the first paragraphs.…

William Marston, the creator of the DC Comics character Wonder Woman, designed the heroine after being inspired by Margaret Sanger and the women’s suffrage movement (Margaret Sanger). Although she didn’t wear Bracelets of Submission or red leather boots, Margaret Sanger was quite the superhero herself; she was the founder of the modern birth control movement. She fought tirelessly for women’s rights to contraception and freedom of speech in a time when information about birth control and sex was made unavailable by Comstock laws, which she was arrested eight times for breaking. Sanger is also known as the founder of Planned Parenthood, a clinic that provides reproductive health services worldwide. However, none of this would have happened if…

She’s The Man, or shall i say “the original love triangle”, is a teenage film adaptation of William shakespeare's Twelfth Night which was written in 1601. The film was a good comedic version of shakespeare’s work, one scene that stands out is when Viola juggles between being herself and Sebastian at the carnival. For example, when she has to change in various places throughout the carnival provides serious comedic relief and shows how hard it really is to be two people. This entire scene reveals the rising action of the story progression and foreshadows the problem with Duke.…

Disney purchased Marvel Comics in 2009 as an intellectual property acquisition, due to its characters and brands being a strategic fit for Disney’s family-oriented brands (Gamble & Turnipseed, 2014, p. C-324). Thus, its characters such as Spiderman, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and other superheroes were distributed throughout other Disney businesses, including its theme parks, retail stores, and video game business (Thompson et al., 2016, p. 218). Disney’s studio entertainment BU intends to produce two Marvel films a year, such as Captain American 3 to be released this year (Gamble & Turnipseed, 2014, p. C-324; C-333). Besides films, Marvel related television shows are produced and distributed by the media networks BU, such as ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. From these films and TV shows, an array of merchandise is fashioned and distributed by the consumer products division. This synergy is also transferred to the parks and resorts BU in merchandise and the Hong Kong Disneyland Resort is even expected to construct an Iron Man attraction.…
