As this course comes to a closing, I must admit I truly enjoyed it. I have never been one who was really into history; however, I enjoy visiting historical sites. The two topics that really caught my interest were the Salem Witch Trials and The Great Awakening. What I found fascinating about the Great Awakening was that it only took one person, Jonathan Edwards, to spark such a considerable rift amongst the American Colonies. The seminar that was led by Leica Books she talked about various topics that are tending but not spoke about. Miss. Books was send from a non-profit organization, “Southern Poverty Law Center” in Montgomery, Alabama. Being that Alabama is a predominantly white state, this organization was founded by two white men which is really good but ironic. Entry 1 I am nervous and excited for this class. I want to know and understand the systemic oppression people of color face, but I am afraid, and embarrassed, that I know so little in the first place. The only background I have for this course is that I live in America and I read The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. She argues mass incarceration is the new Jim Crow. In order to complete my HNC Graded Unit, I a required to complete an evaluation. This evaluation will reflect on my practice during the activity which I planned on the 20th of March 2017 and participated in on the 7th of April 2017 with a resident within my placement, Mr X as previously discussed. The evaluation will be completed and submitted on the 15th of May 2017. Initially, I was under the impression that this class was going to be a joke. I had lived in the South for 21 years and thought I already knew everything about the South. After reading Dr. Eckard’s syllabus, I knew this was not going to be the case. The Bill of the Century: The Epic Battle for the Civil Rights Act by Clay Risen is a book that tells about the struggle to get the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed. The author, Clay Risen, is the Senior Staff Editor of the New York Times, and has written other books including, A Nation on Fire: America in the Wake of the King Assassination and, American Whiskey, Bourbon & Rye: A Guide to the Nation’s Favorite Spirit. He has also written for The New Republic, Smithsonian, and The New York Times Sunday Magazine. He got his Master of Arts degree at The University of Chicago, and is Bachelor of Arts at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service. When I was in elementary and middle school I didn't really have a subject preference. I was just okay at every subject and I couldn't find myself interested in anything particular. This class has been a very fun and enjoyable experience in learning about the very important Warren Court Era. The Warren Court has led the way for variety of changes in the United States of America through landmark decisions like Brown v. Board of Education and Miranda v. Arizona. A very interesting thing that I learned was that Earl Warren was appointed by Dwight D. Eisenhower with the intent that Warren would be a very conservative judge, but as cases were presented to the Supreme Court the American people soon learned that Warren was a very liberal and revolutionary Supreme Court justice. It feels like so long ago when I first began this English course. I can remember being so excited about the class topic, racism and social justice, which I felt that I had a lot of passion for. Little did I know that I would have to gather up even more enthusiasm and passion to be able to continue writing papers about the same topic all semester long. This course has tested my endurance, and at many times my patience, and for that I am thankful because I know in the end, it has made me a better writer. The lessons the workshop taught the children that went through it was invaluable. We hope that we as adults show our children learn from us the mistakes of the past and treat people equally. A lot of times unfortunately people have stigmata’s either put on them by society because of how they look or they put them on themselves and people treat them differently. The lessons that this workshop teaches are lessons that everyone should have. You can spend our entire life trying to instill the values in your children that this class does in two days, and I want my children to be kind to people as we all do; I do not want them to ALIENATE someone because they are not the same as them, different ETHNITICIY or part of a MINORITY GROUP.…
Throughout the course of the semester we have learned about so many artists, and the transitions to different music genres. We have seen how music has grown throughout the years, and how artists use their songs to express their feelings, and their concerns over issues. As the years have progressed, we have seen how artists have become more vocal on issues that are have been occurring in the United States. I especially enjoyed the exploration of brain activity and the effect the trauma can have on the brain this week. I think that the way the slides were organized were a great way to gradually expand on knowledge introduced in the readings, and slowly but surely increase the complexity of the ideas. While I am attempting to critically analyze the class, I really do think that the slides and concepts were laid out perfectly and connected well to the course content. The fact that each slide built another layer of information onto the main topic without making things to complex was easy to understand and therefor easy to learn.…
