When I entered the classroom for the first time, I couldn’t help but notice the Lincoln School Pledge displayed on the wall. In short, it is a statement that each individual student must follow about doing their best in every subject, obeying the rules and being responsible and respectful, and coming to school ready to learn. Later in the year, they also developed their own philosophies about being kind and respectful to classmates, teachers, and administration. Spencer J. Maxcy, professor at Louisiana State University, in his article “Happiness in Education Through the Development of a School Philosophy, states, “Schools that are treating people well, doing business in a friendly manner and advancing way, and know what they are about, tend to foster happiness” (Maxcy, 2001). He believes that schools tend to be happier across the board if they are practicing meaningful philosophies, similar to that set forth by the Lincoln School District. I hope I can establish the same principles in my future classroom and be a part of a school with similar
