Life of an English Teacher
As a student, many people think all English teachers are the same or maybe even use the same methods. But while interviewing Mrs. Taylor, one of my English teachers from High School, I was intrigued by the different methods, activities, and even the classroom environment. During this day I took the time to spend a day on the teacher’s side of the desk and see what I can learn from someone in the profession, and might I say I was exceptionally impressed.
To start off the first period of Freshman English class, Mrs. Taylor has an inspirational quote up for students to write about. They simply take out a piece of paper known as “Warm Ups”. These are a part of engagement activities for the students. Then there is an Agenda for the day …show more content…
Mrs. Taylor: Usually I never have to give any student something as bad as a suspension, But if a student is disruptive and/or misbehaving then I do issue a 1-2 hour detention.
Myself: What could you do to gain the attention of children who aren’t listening?
Mrs. Taylor: I usually reward the students if they are listening and participating in class room activities. Such as extra credit on an assignment or being excused from a quiz.
Myself: What are possible ways to get children to interact with one another or involved in class?
Mrs. Taylor: I often give out projects for students to get partnered up in groups. This causes students to have to interact with each other and work together. I usually let everyone pick their own groups, but then I switch it up and will have groups already picked out for the class for certain projects. This causes a diversity within the students.
Myself: How important is it to make a connection with students?
Mrs. Taylor: It is extremely important for me to have a connection with my students because they need to know they are comfortable and feel safe and getting valid knowledge and not just thinking of my class as a “blow off”
