They celebrate it all in different ways, but all of them have the same spirit when celebrating this festival. It is one of the main religious Hindu holidays that takes place in India. It is known as the festival of lights because people celebrate by inviting good luck and prosperity from the Hindu Goddess Laxmi and the God Ganesh, who represent wealth and success. In celebration people light small clay lamps, diyas, around their home to light up the place. In my house we don’t light diyas because my father believes one of the “little kids”, also known as me, will knock them down and the house will burn down, but we decorate the house with Christmas lights. It is a five day festival celebrated usually around October or November; it changes each year because the calculations of the days are based on the Hindu lunar calendar. Diwali is celebrated because of the return of Ram and Sita from Ravan. It all starts off when Ram’s father banished Ram and Sita. Sita was the wife of Ram and the goddess of Shakti which is called energy and Ram is the lord of virtue. They were banned from the village of Ayodhya and were commanded to go live in the forest for fourteen years; Lakshman, Ram’s brother, had also joined them. Ravan was king of Sri Lanka and the ten headed demon who kidnapped Sita. Ravan kidnapped her because he thought Sita was a prize and wanted her all to himself. Ram and Lakshman, and the god of wind whos is called Hanuman went searching for Sita. After they destroy the warriors of the kingdom in Sri Lanka and Ravan they rescued Sita and brought her back to Ayodhya. The people of Ayodhya help them guide them to the village by lighting up diyas and once they returned Ram was crowned King. The joyous moment resulted in the celebration of the new year. This festival is a well known festival around India because it is the starting of the new year and many Indians celebrate

Chanukkah, the Jewish festival of rededication, also known as the festival of lights, is an eight-day festival beginning on the 25th day of the Jewish month of Kislev, is probably one of the best known Jewish holidays, not because of any great religious significance, but because of its proximity to Christmas. It is ironic that this holiday, which has its roots in a revolution against assimilation and the suppression of Jewish religion, has become the most assimilated, secular holiday on their calendar. Therefore, the story of Chanukkah begins in the reign of Alexander…
