Study Habits: Sidney High School

Study Habits When people look at my high school, there are many things that make Sidney High School what it is. The most promenade one being our study habits. Even though the school has prided themselves on being one of the highest scoring high schools in Southwest Iowa, there are still six very distinct groups that the students fall into. These would be your overachievers, procrastinators, and the skippers; all of which have their own individual way of studying. Many teachers know their students well enough to know that they write or perform better when given a specific amount of time. This helps because then when grading they can tell how long the student put thought into the answer; such as an overachiever forgot about an assignment …show more content…
On that point, it may help if they were able to schedule different times for different activities such as from 3:00 to 5:00 they have volleyball practice, 6:15 to 8:00 they do homework while eating, 8:00 to 8:45 they have family time, 8:45 to 9:30 they work on their volunteer activities, and then they go to sleep. While this may not seem like the best way to go it keeps you organized, which is a key element. If they are organized than assignments and projects are better able to get do ahead of time. Procrastinators Another common theme in high school is where the student will put off tasks until the absolute last minute. Notably many times this is paired simultaneously with caffeine, sugar, energy drinks, sleepless nights, and other things that come with it as well. Procrastination starts in early adolescence due to an active and passive resistance to parental authority, which empowers them. Procrastination requires both delay and denial, being able to pretend for a moment that in does not exist. It is much the same as the overachiever in the fact that it can create stress. Another key point is that these people thrive under the pressure of stress and in the end are more motivated to finish a deadline. Notably they are excited by the ‘put it off/pull it off’ or the ‘put it off/put it in’ game to hand things in just under the wire and as much as …show more content…
For them it is more of a hassle to get the assignment and be ‘nagged’ by everyone about it, than it is to just forget about completely doing the project. Under the circumstances giving tips to this category of students is much harder do to the fact that even if they did get advice they probably would not fallow it. Not only that but there is not any advice that could be found; besides maybe do your work and go to school. In order to have a better, more successful future you need to get your work done, no matter how much you dislike the task. As can be seen you can see there are many ways to learn and retain the information. Depending upon the student you could be considered in one of the three categories; Overachievers, Procrastinators, or a Skippers. Maybe you are an overachiever, who gets everything done ahead of time, or pushing it off until the last minute-Procrastinator, or even not doing anything-Skipper. All of these groups are what makes up anything and everything within our world and we would not be where we are today unless we had a variety of

On the contrary, active procrastinators deliberately procrastinate as they prefer to work under pressure (Chu and Choi). Studies have revealed three major themes in active procrastinators which include purposeful delays on school work to facilitate greater efficiency even if it means losing sleep to get the work done closer to the due date, systematical procrastination to attain passing grades, and appealing academic social outcomes which leads students to do it again because they conceived a satisfying outcome previously and felt the action of procrastination to be worth the end results (Hensley). Recent statistics have revealed an estimated eighty to ninety-five percent of college and university level students suffer from active procrastination, and thirty to fifty percent of students said they had difficulties with preparing for exams, beginning the written process of papers, and doing class readings (Yerdelen). Statistics revealed ten to twelve percent of those college students to be under extreme stress and one of the main stressors being school related due to procrastination (Peer et…

Because, as delay shortens time to get a project done, deadline pressure induces stress to get it done. Graduating from high school, many of these young people take the habit with them to college, making that demanding experience more stressful too. For example, stoked with stimulants like caffeine, sugar, or high energy drinks to stay awake, they pull an all-night stand to get a paper done, stagger to class to turn it in, quickly leaving class to go and get a good day's sleep, missing lecture content they will be tested on next week. It is also harder to attend school when an individual is older because whenever an individual is older, they might have a lot going on at the time period and may not be able to attend the lecture. Students should attend college because they have many opportunities to…
