This review takes a closer look at the article written by T. Khanna, J. Song and K. Lee; “The Paradox of Samsung’s Rise” that was published in the Harvard Business Review in 2011, July-August edition, pages 142-147. They studied the process of Samsung’s development for seven years in order to provide insights for modern companies that are planning to enter the global market by identifying its essential success factors.
The Samsung group is currently the largest company in South Korea. When the company expanded internationally in 1993, it implemented new strategies to remain competitive in a foreign market. For instance, the writers inserted a diagram which helps the readers understand the main concept of Samsung’s new hybrid management system without reading this article multiple times. On the other hand, background information given in the introduction allows audience to obtain basic knowledge of the firm before undertaking learning. In addition, the examples used in an article are highly useful since it discovers a way to relate the theory to the real world.
Weaknesses and limitations
There are a few points that requires improvement in this article. To start with, the introduction does not announce the purpose of research which is considered as a crucial step in order to prevent readers from misunderstanding the general objectives of the study. The authors only addresses the emergence of Samsung as the world’s market leader and the strategies adopted by the firm in order to enter the global market successfully. Secondly, despite the fact that the article mentions the cultural challenges occurred during the globalization procedure, it fails to reveal other difficulties confronted by the firm, leading the audience to acquire distorted perspectives that the only obstacle to international business expansion was cultural differences among Korean and non-Korean employees. Despite the fact that there were numerous challenges that threatened the stability of Samsung, the company was able to acquire a large global market share by changing some of its core business strategies and broadening the knowledge about market approaches. By observing the company’s circumstances reported in the article, we could create following questions to the authors:
Did Samsung consider the potential adverse effects that might occur when implementing its hybrid management strategy?
How could Samsung fund its rapid business expansion during the financial crisis in South Korea (1997-1998)?
What are the tasks for Samsung in order to keep its level of growth sustainable?
