A parable is a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson. There are many different parables out there in the world, each written by various authors and writers. In “The Pearl”, there is a parable. The beginning of the book is really where the parable is set. The story starts with a really positive vibe. Kino, the main character, has nothing to worry about in life. He has a family, shelter, clothing, and job. All of his happiness quickly fades when his baby, Coyotito, gets stung by a scorpion. After Kino and Juana find the pearl, they are thinking of everything they could buy with it, as well as how they would give the money to the doctor to have him help Coyotito. In “The Pearl,” by John Steinbeck, Coyotito is not just a child, he is the symbol of life for his parents, Juana and Kino. He is also the future for Kino and his family, and also the precursor to Kino’s actions. In the beginning of the book, Coyotito causes himself harm with out realizing it, which is then mirrored later on through Kino’s actions. As the story goes on, people begin to target the baby in order to get closer to the pearl, this same type of incident happens when Kino gets attacked is also depicted later on when people start to go after Kino for the same reasons. As the story comes to an end and Coyotito is shot dead, his parents have nothing to live for.…

Kino is finally happy with his life after he throws the pearl into the water. To me, when the book says the pearl disappears it is symbolic to whole story showing that the thing that was causing the evil and greed is finally gone and over. I can relate this to another book I read because in the end it became the complete opposite and the greed took over their lives. It became so much as the man got sent to jail because he was being greedy and…
