On Tuesday, March 22sd, 2016, I visited the Cummer Museum of Arts and Gardens in Jacksonville, Florida. In the museum, I observed many pictures and pieces of art within the photography, painting and sculpture exhibit of the museum. This following piece of art” Parable of the Marriage Feast made by Pieter Aertsen, stood out to me and therefore I choose to discuss it.
Pieter Aertsen, called Lange Pier meaning “Tall Pete” because of his height, was a Dutch Painter. He invented the monumental genre scene, which he was remarkably known for, often included a biblical scene in the background, combined still life and genre painting. Aertsen was born in 1507 and died in 1575 in Amsterdam. He was trained in Amsterdam, but worked for much of his career in Antwerp, where he enrolled in the Guild of St. Luke, the center of artistic life in the Netherlands as a master painter. “Parable of the Marriage Feast” was created around 1550 - 1554 and this large size of …show more content…
His paintings seem to have been strongly influenced by other Antwerp artists such as Leonardo da Vinci. I think that the painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder “Peasant Wedding” (1566-67) , oil on panel, in page 68 in the textbook is most closely related to Pieter Aertsen painting. Both are oil on panel, crowed, disorganized and may have similar story.
The Cummer museum have quite great collection that can be very every informative for college students or people that have interest in art. They have many ancient time period, modern art and some local painting. If I had money I would probably bought “Theseus Discovering his father’s Sword for the simple reason that it show courage of a young man.
