"Paper Wings"

I’ve seen you fly on paper wings.
You soared halfway around the world but you burned up in the atmosphere to send you spiraling down below.

You landed somewhere far from here with no one else around,
I tried to catch you falling down and i’m looking for you now.

He told you “Swing for the fences, son” a conversation you took nothing from.
So let us raise a glass to you, let us celebrate everything you’ve done.

Keep putting off of knowing where you’re from.
You can catch up with yourself if you run.

Statement of Intent:
My poem is about how a person with hope and great potential who threw everything away by following the wrong path in life. I use the story of Icarus as a tool to guide my poem as it is used as a metaphor for being too cocky and pursuing bad choices in life for example doing drugs. I use ‘paper wings’ to symbolise futility, this implies the protagonist is ‘flying’ on a futile path and will eventually fall. The protagonist’s bravery grows and grows until he flies too close to the sun, sending the person spiraling down. This implies the protagonist grew too careless, which sends him into an episode of depression, where his hopes and dreams are lost

I continue this by proposing a toast to everything he has done in his life, these two lines have a hint of sarcasm and thus shows that the protagonist had potential, but threw that all away. I conclude the sonnet by giving a motivational message to the protagonist, “You can catch up with yourself if you run”, this tells the person that even though he is falling behind in life due to his failure, if he runs, he could catch up with life and change to a better

Each of the two stanzas has a different energy. In the first stanza, the eagle is very calm, ready to pounce, with a lot potential energy, sitting on the steep cliff. The author describes it as “Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.” In the second stanza the mood goes from calm to drastic, quickly. In the poem, lines 4 and 5, state “He watches from his mountain walls, And like a thunderbolt he falls.”…

My favorite worship song would have to be “Out of Hiding” by Steffany Gretzinger. The first time I heard it, I was at The Oaks Freedom Weekend and the Lord was setting me free from several things that were holding me back that I didn’t even realize were present. He was breaking away identity issues that others placed on myself and He renamed me as worthy and chosen. This song is dear to my heart because it reminds me of that day and also the point of view of The Father singing over His children. So often, we want to distance ourselves from the Lord whenever we are struggling with sin to hide because we want to clean ourselves up before coming to Him.…

For Americans, hard work has got to be one of the biggest beliefs in history. Without it, they would not be here today. Francis Scott Key showed hard work in the very famous piece, “The Star Spangled Banner”, while Peter Segal, the director of “Tommy Boy”, was able to show how they all can fight for what they believe in. Segal and Key both use well known works to show the belief of hard work to America.…

Growing up as a hispanic woman in America has always been more difficult than I thought it was going to be. There were many times where I felt excluded, judged or like I am not as good as other people. Throughout my life this has always affected my happiness because it was never as easy as I wanted it to be. With that being said, many people that are also a different race also struggle with this problem and this affects their wellbeing as well. I came to realize what a struggle being a person of color is to other people as well after carefully reading a short story by Junot Diaz called “Wildwood” and a poem by Claudia Rankine called “From Citizen Six” where both of the characters were treated unfairly, and ran into issues on a daily basis because…

When sadness overcomes people, they often devote themselves to literature to focus on another world. Helping them to get over their own sorrow, they read poems such as “The Raven”. Those poems are very popular and loved for such a long time. The reason for that is that people read it and the poem makes them feel something, it makes them think or it helps them in a hard time. One example for that is “The Raven”.…

“Fishhawk” was the first poem of the Classic of Poetry, the earliest poetry collection of East Asia (p.1322). In contrast to many poems in the “Airs of Domain” that propagated Confucianism, “Fishhawk” is a simple love poem. The poem revolves around a young man who was “tormented by his desire for a girl”(p.1322). While this poem is labeled as a “romantic folk song”(p.1322), the good use of literary elements, syntax, and language added a bit of tint to the love story.…

Owen, Faulks and Barker attempt to express the horrors of trench warfare through carefully crafting their language but, in doing so, prove that the horrors are so great that no form of language can truly express it. Mansur, quoting Howard Pinter, argues that “the more tense the experience, the less articulate the expression”, believing Owen cannot communicate the true horrors of war however eloquently he writes. It can be presumed that Faulks and Barker, through vivid imagery, also fail to do this. However, this is a false presumption to make. By using “articulate expression” , Faulks and Barker prevent themselves from immersing in the suffering of the soldiers, but they become spectators fully capable of describing what they see, the “tense…

Poem analysis I chose to use similes, metaphors and personification too effectively explain what I do in my life, by using these poetic devices I created an image of me flying by using a simile when I said ‘flying makes you feel like a bird.’ I also used a simile for what it feels like and smells like to fly when I said ‘The smell of the control yoke rubs off on your hands, like pen to paper.’ I used a metaphor to express the feeling of what it’s like to fly, is said ‘soaring freely, you are a bird when you fly.’ I used personifications to explain the feeling of flight when I said ‘flying makes you feel like a bird, soaring freely, you are a bird when you fly!’ When I was explaining what and when I swim I uses a simile by saying ‘blue is the…

Summary Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer is a picture book told entirely in poems. Each poem details a certain part of Fannie Lou Hamer’s life and her mission for racial equality during the Civil Rights Movement. Her story is not one that is commonly told when discussing the Civil Rights Movement, but it is a very important one to read. What is quite unique about this particular story, is that it tells the story of the Civil Rights Movement from the perspective of this woman, who was very active at the time, but is not as well known today, while at the same time mentioning well-known leaders of the time.…

“Imagine the Angels of Bread” is a poem where the speaker lists the multiple injustices in the world and levels it out so that those suffering can have either justice or those committing the injustices are punished. In the poem’s multiple directions to “imagine,” Martin Espada presents a call to arms to the reader, encouraging them to imagine the wrongdoings and to hopefully act upon them. By getting the readers to imagine such injustice and by having hope that one day the wrongs will be righted, Espada manages to effectively paint a world of darkness full of anger, compassion, vengeance, hopeful visions, reality, and dreams for the future. In the first stanza of the poem, the speaker tells us of the many abuses within the world and reverses…
