The life of a soldier in World War One was one filled with death, destruction, and atrocity. For many, the reality in which they existed proved too much for what one person could handle. A soldier often returned a different man, both physically and psychologically. In Joseph Boyden’s Three Day Road”, the main characters Elijah and Xavier are subjected to this reality. In contrasting the different personalities of Elijah and Xavier, one can demonstrate how war is experienced by individuals in very different ways.…
Atticus is a lawyer who helps a colored man in a case his name is Tom Robinson he knows that he should at least try to help. In the story, Lee shows readers how Atticus thinks about other people and that he stands up for what he believes when she wrote, “‘Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win’” (Lee 101). A few of them stand out as fundamentally unorthodox. Bernard Marx, Helmholtz Watson, and Mustapha Mond are all unorthodox, but they vary in how and why they are unorthodox. Bernard Marx is a strongly unorthodox character, mainly because of his physical appearance; He is shorter than the other Alphas, and they find him strange.…

While watching Rory Sutherland’s TED talk there was one quote that stood out the most, “We need to spend more time appreciating what already exists, and less time agonizing over what else we can do...to make new things familiar and familiar things new.” My interpretation of the quote is that new changes will become familiar in time and they remain new to everyone who does not know or understand the circumstance. We spend so much time trying to stay away from change that when new ideas or situations appear we rather stay with the old than increase our knowledge. However, we still need to learn to appreciate things that already exist before creating new things. The example that Sutherland used in his TED talk was funny yet very interesting, he…
One of my favorite quotes is “Man is the only creature who refuses to be what he is”. As the boys come onto my island, some of them decide to hold back or change themselves to gain a following. This applies to two boys in particular. Piggy, who believes that if he hides his intelligence he will be able to shield himself from shrewdness from the other boys. Also Jack who is under the impression that if he becomes aggressive and an “alfa” figure on the island he will gain a following from the other boys, eventually resulting in him being chief.…
