My paper is on the field experience that I conducted at White Oak Learning Academy in Cumming, Georgia for the Education 2130 - Exploring Teaching and Learning course. I will discuss the school’s setting, curriculum, the students, faculty, and the staff that I encountered. I will take particular situations and compare them to the textbook lessons from Educational Psychology: Theory and peer-reviewed sources. The time that I spent at White Oak Learning Academy was very educational. Even with the year I spent as a substitute teacher in the Killeen Independent School District, which I thought I had learn enough, the experience in this small center showed me a different side to the education process.

In my younger school years, the biggest thing was having a television in the classroom. That piece of technology, which today is not even remotely important, made it possible for me to watch the Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster as it unfolded live. From transistor radios to cassette player from computers to tablets, technology is where we are now. Students rarely get an actual textbook to take home. Today, most pedagogical research concerning laptops focuses on whether they do, indeed, offer pedagogical advantages. Both are common misconceptions. Before this class I also thought that those two things showed that the teacher was in control of his or her classroom. I have learned the errors of my ways. I think that an effective classroom management plan provides an environment where work can be conducted in a smooth and orderly manner.
