Coco chanel was born August 19, 1883 in France. Her timeless designs, the little black dress, the classic Chanel suits, and Chanel No. 5 perfume has forever changed the fashion industry. Chanel created a modern functional chic look for women to feel more comfortable in their clothes. She described the concept as “less is more.” Her idea was inspired by men’s clothing and sportswear for an effortless elegant look for women. Chanel made the color black known as a chic and versatile piece. This dress can be worn for a cocktail party or a elegant evening wear. It had a simple cut and short essentials for a complete wardrobe. She designed costumes pieces for shows, artists and friends. When she was dating her Russian boyfriend she became influenced by their culture and started creating oversized jewelry. “She admired his British tweeds, which she turned into coats for her customers, trimmed with fur for a luxurious and softer look”(Polan & Tredre, 2009, p. 40). Sailors inspired Chanel to create flared trousers. One of her best known designs was her navy blue wool-jersey suit. “The jacket had square shoulders and was lightly padded with patch pockets and sleeves that unbuttoned to reveal white cuffs”(p.41). The armhole was crucial and was tailored to create a close fit. She added a gold chain sewn into the hem of the jacket to make sure it hung well.
