Paper On Barcelona

Barcelona is in Catalonia, which is in Spain and was founded in 230 BC. This was the capital of the region at that time. It became the capital during the 5th century. There is some historical significance in Barcelona, some of it including when it was founded and its original name. According to “History of Spain” some things about Barcelona was found including that “Barcelona was originally named Barcino, named after the Carthaginian ruler Hamilcar Barca (1).” It is located on the eastern side of Catalonia, Spain. Barcelona has been around for awhile and seems like a fun place to be at because of where it’s located.

The history of Barcelona is quite long, but easy to explain. “Barcelona was founded during the first century by the Phoenicians and Carthaginians. The Romans arrived during the 1st century B.C. choosing as the capital of the region, first Tarraco and since the 3rd century A.D. Barcino(“History of Spain” 1). The languages are Catalan and Spanish. Catalan is the side language that is spoken there and Spanish is the main language there, but “Catalan is spoken by 9 million people in Catalonia(“The Guardian” 1). There are a lot of people living in Barcelona, the total population there is 1.63 in 2014 and is steadily increasing. Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain at 39.34 mi2. There is a lot of tourism in Barcelona especially during the summer. The best time to go to Barcelona is May through June because of the temperature. Some places that people touring Barcelona could visit would be visiting Barri Gòtic, Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, and Güell Park (Parc Güell).
