Papa John’s is a business unit, (Parnell, 2008). One of the largest pizza chains in the country, along with Domino’s and Pizza Hut in the carryout delivery pizza market. The company was founded by John Schnatter in 1984 when he began to sell pizza in the back room of his father’s tavern. He financed the business by selling his 1971 Chevy Camaro for $2,800, he also gave a portion of the proceeds to his family business. He eventually bought the car back in 2009 for $250,000 after creating a website offering the amount as a reward for the car to be returned. As of a poll taken, Papa John’s was ranked number one in consumer preferences. (PMQ, 2017). The threats the firm has to deal with come from only Pizza Hut and Domino’s in this market. As with strategies to maintain their market presence, Papa John’s has several sports teams that state this is the official pizza for them. These commissaries supply each franchise within specified boundaries. When stores open in new territory, the company builds new commissaries to provide supplies. Furthermore, having off-site dough making and a dedicated supply chain reduces costs and provides consistency for the product throughout the stores. One notable controversy Papa John’s had to deal with is the slogan everyone has heard through advertisements, “Better Ingredients. Better Pizza," this led to a legal battle with Pizza Hut. ( Altahawi, S. a. 2000). The basis for the action was that their claim was misleading that Papa John’s was better than Pizza Hut. Originally Papa John’s lost, however, through the appeals process, the ruling was overturned in favor of Papa John’s, and the court ruled that boasting about one’s product is not misleading consumers, but it is just a statement of opinion.
