The story take place in 1944 during the Spanish civil war, which emphasis around modernist motion and also a lean towards fascism in Spain. The setting in the fantasy world is direct parallels to the real world. Guillermo is actively trying to merge these two worlds together. The room Ofelia sleep and her mother sleeps in is the real world, but Ofelia uses the same room to go to the fantasy world by drawing a door on the floor with a chalk. Del Toro was trying to show the audience that Ofelia can get into the fantasy world pretty much anywhere she is with the magical chalk that was given to her by the faun.
