Del Toro uses film techniques such as mid shots, diegetic sound, mise en scene and non diegetic sound. An important film technique del toro used was a mid shot. He's used this many times throughout this scene but the one that stood out the most was when ofelia climbed through the door and the audience could see the distinction between the fantasy and the real world. Del toro showed the audience that we need to choose when it's okay to disobey and when we should not as sometimes there will be consequences for our choices. This relates back to society today as people try and push their luck even after being warned multiple times not to do something and a lot of the times this comes with consequences. An example of disobedience in history would be Anne Frank, even though Anne knew the consequences of disobeying hitler she still did it. Ofelia disobeys throughout the film and she never has remorse for her actions because in her eyes they are seen as the right choice, just like Anne …show more content…
This technique shows the pale man sitting at his table with the fireplace behind him, in this shot you can also see the tall pillars and the checkered floor. The colour scheme is dark reds and browns but although the colours are dark this shot is quite bright. This technique is quite powerful as it relates back to the scene earlier in the film where the captain is sitting at the banquet table with a fireplace behind him. Del Toro did this to show that the pale man and the captain are both seen as villains and are quite similar. Captain Vidal is rationing food during his scene in the film, this relates back to the pale man scene as ofelia was told not to eat any food as there would be consequences. The pale man also has no fear in killing children and as you find out later in the film neither does the captain. Del Toro made the pale man and the captain similar to show that ofelia’s fantasy world is based off her real life. The lighting used in this mise-en scene shot was very bright although Del Toro used dark colours, this is to show that even though her fantasy world is quite dark to her it brings her light and joy. In ofelia's fantasy world nothing can hurt her but in her real world she's easily hurt as she is not in control of every situation she is put in. This relates back to society as world leaders such as donald trump are compared to

In Shakespeare’s a Midsummer Night’s Dream the characters are very similar to how people are in real life; the audience has to observe and infer on who they are, it is not simply stated. This play will take the reader through many loops and jumps around love stories through a series of comedic events. “”The title suggests an atmosphere of fantasy, whimsy, and imagination, which is a pretty accurate description of the magical wood where characters experience events that seem more like a dream than reality.””” Shakespeare has a unique way of leaving the audience with the feeling of uncertainty; it becomes difficult to tell whether one is experiencing reality or an illusion. The final scene is interesting to the audience as it creates suspense and conveys to the audience many themes, such as sacrifice, destiny, and love. The use of cross-cutting from Jamal’s point of view to Salim’s and even Latika’s creates anticipation for the audience as to what is going to happen. Boyle is purposefully showing the shots of Latika running towards the phone and Salim layering money in the bath tub to create suspense for the audience as the figure out what will happen, and how each scene pieces into the end game of the movie. A scene that was particularly interesting and true to the theme of redemption was Salim’s death scene.…

In Clark and McDonald’s (2010) text, the theme of the fantasy genre is dispelled through an analysis of the “realization” of Ofelia’s experiences in a fantasy world. The article describes the various aspects adult-themed behaviors that are often interjected into Ofelia’s imagination, which makes the fantasy world more like the “real world” in the plot of this film. The depiction of real life as a more dangerous environment is another major problem with the escapist theme of Pan’s Labyrinth. Ofelia’s intersecting experiences between the Spanish Civil War and the Underworld define similar dangers that Ofelia must face as a child. Franco's Civil War was certainly a horrific event in Spanish history, yet the premise of escaping reality is not…

Guillermo del Toro uses visual storytelling, character traits, and comparison through editing to convey the essential themes of Romance and fairytales. He then uses these strategies to mix fantasy and reality, and increase the sense of danger for Ofelia and the viewer. In the classic Romance narrative, the hero acts as a metaphor for the divine, and the villain acts as a metaphor for the devil. Ofelia in Pan’s Labyrinth is the hero that is a associated with nature, and therefore the divine. Ofelia is presented wearing earthy tones, surrounded by natural light and often leaving man-made locations for the forest.…

Jim Henson’s “Labyrinth”, reflect aspects of Bettelheim, and Freud’s theories. Both revolve around the subconscious, but Bettelheim’s theory compliments Freud’s. Bettelheim believes “Fairytales with the darkness of abandonment, death, witches, and injuries, allowed children to grapple with their fears in remote, symbolic terms which allow them to resolve conflicts within themselves (Armstrong)”. Whenever conflicts are aroused or being resolved within the person, it is often through their subconscious that these conflicts are being resolved. But in “Labyrinth” Sarah’s case merges both theories together and creates the concepts of threat, recovery, escape, and consolation.…

As far as techniques, to make the film feel more genuine, jumps and shifts are created through editing. One scene that continued to happen was the actors use of stairs and tunnels. This made the film feel that it was more than just inside a frame because it gave the film levels and depth. The use of montage is used for instance when you see the character begin to go up the stairs and then there is a cut and he is already at the top of the staircase leaving. This is an aspect that also made the film seem so realistic because you as a person know what it is like to do such actions so it makes the audience easy to relate to Antonio’s…

From del Toro’s series of movies over the years, it can be noted that he has the tendency to combine poetic elixir with an imaginative vision, with occasionally a twist of horror. The film’s main plot is about a little girl, Ofelia, moving in with her stepfather during the upsurge of Fascism. Pan’s Labyrinth is exceptional as the film’s storyline is based on a fairytale. It is parable: a simplified story of a greater spiritual or moral lesson. Whilst war is on, Ofelia discovers a world beyond the war, beyond her family and beyond realism.…
