Pan’s Labyrinth commences when the main character, an eleven year old girl named Ofelia, and her pregnant, sickly mother travel into the forest to an old mill with her evil stepfather. Ofelia clings to her mother at the beginning of the story to not confront the unhappiness of her reality. One night she sneaks out of the mill lured by a locus to an enchanted garden in the forest, and interacts with a faun that informs her about her father and her potential future. Once she returns back to mill to discover her mother’s health is declining, putting her soon-to-be brother’s health at risks as well, she realizes she needs to take action, establishing a monomyth.

To complete her first quest, she traveled to the forest into the dangerous realm of the fantasy world. She was required to kill an enormous bullfrog because the magical key inside of the frog would open the door to the next destination. Then, she traveled to the liar of the child-eating, pale monster with one eye to retrieve a dagger. This task was more difficult than the first since she was tempted by the delectable food choices on the table. From a viewer’s perspective, it was obvious that she would devour the food, especially after the faun warned her to resist it. Seeing that this action led to the banishment of the fantasy world, it was also apparent that she would have to redeem herself in order to resume her journey.
