The Crucible is a play that takes place in Salem, Massachusetts. At the beginning of the play, a group of girls go dancing in the woods with a black slave names, Tituba. Caught by Reverend Parris, he makes the girls leave. Shortly after that the girls ring is broken up by Parris. Shortly after the group is disbanded, Betty, Parris’s daughter becomes very ill. She goes into a coma and is unresponsive. When this happens, suspicion of witchcraft are sparked in the town. Parris calls Reverend Hale into town, who is an expert on witchcraft. The community of Salem was fine and smooth running until one thing went wrong. Once the community caught wind of possible witchcraft, it was send into a state of mass hysteria. This caused a close, tight knit community, to turn against one another and have people who are friends, and family, turn against one another. These people once trusted each other and are now accusing others of murdering babies and association with the devil. Others use this panic as a way to advance themselves. The most prominent example being Abigail using it to get Elizabeth out of the way to be with …show more content…
One part I particularly enjoyed is a very small, irrelevant part of the play, but shows a lot about the character of the characters. In the end, Hale please that the accused of witchcraft falsely admit to the crimes they have been charged with. All of them refused to be persuaded into admitting something they were not guilty of. This show that they are strong, and willing to stand up for themselves. Most people would give in immediately in fear for their life, but John and the others acted on the contrary. They refused, because they knew that they were innocent. It takes a lot of guts to accept death in the light that you uphold your integrity. One thing I believe they could improve on is just more depth into the story. I found myself questioning how Abigail became involved in witchcraft. What drew her into that and why hadn’t she been caught

“The townspeople of Salem accept and become active in the hysteria, not only because the hysteria gives them a chance to act on long-held grudges and express restrained opinions” (Browne). It is these people who were truly in need of a more righteous outlook than the many innocent people accused. Their community shows the impact that believing something so heavily can have. “In the end, hysteria can thrive only because people benefit from it. It suspends the rules of daily life and allows the acting out of every dark desire and hateful urge under the cover of righteousness” (Sparknotes).…
