Pancho Villa came to power using his military genius and his use of advancing media technology to win the support of the people. To create a positive public opinion of himself, Villa “…signed a contract with Hollywood’s Mutual Film Company to film many of his battles” (Edgenuity 5). Villa’s borderline obsession with the camera led to the winning of the people’s support. Ironically, as advancing technology helped him become the leader of a widely feared army, technological advances also became Villa’s downfall, as in 1915, his forces (consisting of 19th century style cavalry) were decimated in a battle with Carranza’s “…Barbed wire, sophisticated machine guns, and trench warfare” (Edgenuity 8).
