What does it mean to be an American? This question comes to our mind when we have to determine who is an American and who is not. This question relates to the story of Panchito, a Mexican boy who moved to US. spending several years finding the meaning of American. One of the impactful scene of the story is he tried to memorize The Declaration of Independence to speak in front of classroom. Unfortunately, when he went to class, an immigration official went to catch him because he moved to US illegally and he is not an American. Back to the question above, what does it mean to be an American? Had Panchito felt he had become American? Undeniably, he is an American by all of his actions and also his pure heart.

Panchito’s family is also undocumented that did the labor job and get a low wage. His family lived in California doing a farm job, and moving place to place. The farm owners accept them to work but pay only some dollar for their work. Although his family does not have much money, he still wants him to go to school to meet American friends, learn English, and learn the way to be American (Jimenez). He and his father believe that English is a door that open for him to be American. Sometimes, He has to work hard to begin learning English. Also, he has to help his family to work or take care his younger sibling that make him does not have much time to learn English out of class. He has to remember the vocabulary and grammar by writing into his notepad and memorize it in his free time of work. The result of that attempt present to our eyes by he writes his own book, The Circuit, which he writes it in English language. Besides, He also learns more about American.
