Pancake House Photograph Analysis

The photograph in question depicts an ordinary inner city Pancake House restaurant and surrounding urban street clutter. Judging from the presence of an air conditioning system mounted in the window of the restaurant, a newspaper vending machine just outside, and the prominent hippie flower painted upon a pillar, it can be deduced that the photograph was taken in Chicago, America in the late 1960s or early 1970s. There is also a strong sense of verticality emanating from the foreground objects in the photograph. Pillars and poles all show prominent vertical lines in an almost artistic composition in the photograph, effectively dividing and drawing attention to the main focus areas.

Daisy is not really a flapper, but she does fit in with the time. Hilliardem, the author of the “Flappers and Old Sports” page of The Great American Novel: 1900-1965 website, wrote about how Daisy’s style is different than most of the women in her day. The website explains how Daisy’s style is more traditional and consistent especially compared to Myrtle, the woman Tom is having an affair with, who changes her clothes often (Hilliardem). Daisy is an example of how the people in the 1920s were careless. This is seen in how she has an affair with Gatsby and says that she loves him but then does not leave Tom for him and does not care about his feelings.…

    1. Figure 4.3, Going Home by Jacob Lawrence. This piece was created in 1946, and was painted with gouache, which is an opaque type of watercolor. I personally did not like this piece, I’m not a fan of the medium used, but nevertheless I found it interesting. In my opinion, the low value and intensity of the yellows and greens are unappealing, I think they make this train or bus seem outdated and old, or just dirty.…

A big issues when it comes to photo manipulation in the food industry, is if a product would ever sell without it being manipulated? The viewers would not want to buy it if it doesn’t look appetising. If the food industry would advertise what they actually sell, people wouldn’t buy it. Image walking past a big poster of a McDonald's advertisement, and the burger is messy, the meat doesn’t look fully cook, and the lettuce is not fully green you would not want to buy it. There is a reason why Mcdonald never advertises their real burgers because McDonald uses frozen beef patties, to keep prices low, they buy the cheapest ingredients, advertising what the actually meat look like can cause lots of people not to buy it, and without any buyers the industry will fail and be lost.…
