Democratic Rule: Panama was initially a Constitutional Democracy, but in 1968 a coup to over throw the government succeeded into bringing militants to power. During the 80s General Manuel Noriega of the Panamanian military took control of the government. The US intervened in the situation after diplomatic and economic tactics did not work to remove Noriega form power. In 1991 US troops were sent in to Panama to remove Noriega and implement democracy. As of now, Panama is considered a Constitutional Representative Democracy, the government has three parts, the legislative, executive and ju dicial branches. The party was created as part of a movement in the late 70s to liberalize the country, originally it was created to coordinate the political activities of government employees and supporters of the party, as well as rallying voters for elections. For 10 years the party managed to stay on top with the support of a wide variety of groups and laborers, peasants, women, young people, and civil servants. After the U.S began occupying Panama in 1989 the party began to decline, but by the 1994 elections the party was able to build up their image and came back with support of labor unions and civil servants, the 1994 election saw PDR win over half the legislature and the presidency. The Panameñista Party had 19.2% and 17 seats, this party is the oldest continuously-operating party in Panama. It was founded in 1932 by Harmodio Arias, a newspaper publisher, and Ezequiel Fernández under the name the National Revolutionary Party. Its membership largely came from Patriotic Communal Action, a nationalist organization that led a coup in 1930 to protest American influence in Panama. Ezequiel Fernández was the party's first elected president. The Solidarity Party had 15.7% with 9 seats, it was a political party in Panama that merged with the National Liberal Party (Partido Nacional Liberal) to formed the new Patriotic Union Party (Partido Union Patriótica).
