Chinese culture, although not alone, was based on ancient traditions such as storytelling. Through storytelling they told myths in order to comprehend current phenomenon’s, one that was told, continuously entertained its audience, this was the creation myth of Pan Gu and Nu Wa. Due to the actions of the previous generations, this myth has made its way through countless generations.
At the beginning of time there was an egg shaped cloud. Cradling inside was the universe suspended in a chaotic state. A qilin is known as a mythical creature made in a chimera-like form, consisting of ox, deer, or a horse. These creatures are also cascaded in scale and fire, like a Chinese dragon. Represented as peaceful and gentle, the qilins are a wonderful sign of an outstanding leader. Along with this, the eastern dragon was also mentioned, due to the different interpretation of the western dragon. This was because in the west dragons were seen as mindless monsters that demolished villages. However, eastern dragons were promoted as intelligent and noble.
This particular Chinese myth was estimated to have been formed in 200 CE, by a Taoist monk named Xu Zheng during a time period known as “Three Kingdoms” in China. Scholars are unsure if this was an ancient myth passed down in southern China around an estimated one thousand years ago, or if pieces of westerns myths have been connected to create this one-of-a-kind story. Throughout my research, I have yet to come across any ritual or religious practices in observance of this

The myth I chose for this week’s assignment tells the story of Mayan creation. This myth comes from an ancient Mayan book, The Popol Vuh, which according to Ancient Origins website “is the corpus of mythological and historical narratives, including the creation story according to the Quiché-Maya people” ("Popol Vuh: The Sacred Narrative Of Maya Creation"). Additionally, Ancient History Encyclopedia states, the Popol Vuh “has been referred to as the Mayan Bible” (Mark, Joshua). The book details the story of two God’s, Tepeu, the maker and Gucumatz, the blue and green feathered spirit. It exclaims that the two God’s came together to build the world by utilizing only their thoughts, simply put they could merely think it and it would come to…

The contrast with the western dragon is that the western dragons usually have a shorter but wider body length, as opposed to the Articulated dragons long and slender body frame. The depicted frames are something that is to be noted as the frames represent the visualization of two different cultures regarding the mythical creature. When comparing with other eastern cultures dragons, there will be many similarities and a few, almost unnoticeable, differences regarding the dragons. Comparing the Articulated Dragon to the Dragon Pendant of China’s Eastern Zhou dynasty, we could see that the frames of both dragons are basically almost identical to one another with some minor differences. The…

Creation myths often serve as a storytelling method in which cultures discuss origins of existence, values, and beliefs. Two creation myths, “The World on the Turtle’s Back” by the Iroquois tribe and “Life from Moon and the Stars” by the Zimbabwe tribe, express similar ideas of God’s tolerance for disobedience. However, the Zimbabwe tribe’s God proves more lenient than those in the Iroquois culture. In both the Iroquois and Zimbabwe myth, God/the gods give their pupils multiple fresh starts after their misconduct.…
