Willow Charter Academy (WCA) is a charter school located in Lafayette, Louisiana and managed by National Heritage Academies (NHA). A close examination of WCA’s Faculty and Staff Handbook, Student and Parent Handbook and NHA’s Employee Handbook show correlation to the federal law and describes some policies and procedures related to students and staff. A comparison between the handbooks and Lafayette Parish School System’s (LPSS) policies and procedures listed online shows the difference between charter and public schools in relation to how their policies are created.…

As a current school counselor at Alexander Central High School, a significant problem I encounter on a daily basis is the lack of students understanding the importance of higher education. The Alexander County community at-large, consistently devalues higher education through their attitudes and actions. According to the US Census Quick Facts (2008-2011), “Only eleven percent of Alexander County citizens have a bachelor’s degree or higher education, while twenty-seven percent of North Carolina residents hold a bachelor’s degree or higher” (p.3). It is imperative that parents and guardians understand how vital their role is in supporting their child 's future in higher education. A collaboration between the school and parents is necessary to emphasize the importance of continuing education after high school.…
