• I believe one of the most important aspects to remember when working in palliative care is to be flexible. Patients can often change their mind as treatment progresses, leaving them fearful, irritable and angry at their illness. By being flexible, caregivers can adjust their care procedures to suit the changing needs of their patients while maximizing their satisfaction with their care.

However, I wish that the film evoked more raw, emotional responses that could’ve allowed me to further sympathize for Bessie. For instance, when Bessie heard from Dr. Wally that the two boys were not eligible for her bone marrow transplant, I thought the scene could have been more somber (i.e. through music or through physical facial expressions of pain) to depict her sense of hopelessness. Bessie was not receiving the miracle treatment that she anticipated throughout the course of the movie. This was the turning point in Bessie realizing that she would no longer be able to take care of her father, Marvin and that all hope had in fact been lost.
