Palestinian-American Culture

Decent Essays
Being a Palestinian-American,culture has impacted my life in more ways than one. Having Arab parents, morals and manners were the main focal points of the way i was brought up. Clothes, food, music, and religion are all the things i associate with culture. I wore the hijab at age 13 and since then, it has shaped my values and beliefs. Some just see it as a piece of fabric around my head, but i see it as a reflection of all the things i was taught growing up. It is a daily reminder of my faith and standards. It reminds me of my obligatory prayers that I have to practice everyday.
When I was 15, a girl in one of my classes didn't understand the concept of the hijab. She thought that it gave power to the men by conforming to their ideas. I began

Islam’s sacred book, Quran, highlights the use of a headscarf. For its followers, the headscarf represents freedom of choice. Wearing a headscarf is optional, but it tells followers, especially female followers, that by wearing one, you are pleasing God. Here’s the thing: most of these women have never had respect or felt any dignity before, and the idea that there is a God out there that “respects” them, and that recognizes them as equal to men, seems to attract women. By wearing a headscarf, you not only are “pleasing God,” you are covering yourself, which leaves men no other choice but to look at you as a human being, therefore you feel comfortable –you don’t have the looks of men all over you-…

The article “My Body Is My Own Business” by Naheed Mustafa is a very thought provoking article. I think that Ms. Mustafa has taken a stand towards traditional dress claiming that it is because it allows her personal freedom. I would suggest that perhaps the article is really intended to initiate and stimulate discussion, amongst women primarily, rather than that of a definite belief system. I feel that she believes what she is saying and believes in her religion but has such strong opinions because it makes her feel special. I do not agree with her that male standards are “humiliating”…

In, “My body is my own business,” the author describes how a hijab is actually quite beneficial with personal thoughts mainly as evidence. While reading this, i found it to be very weak and massively disagreed with her opinion; hijabs are symbols of oppression because it shows male dominance as women are such properties the critic pointed it out. Her main argument is that women can hide their bodily flaws from society by covering up it up with a veil, this can have the opposite effect showing the wearer as a someone who is afraid to be who they really are.…

I learned that Droogsma is correct, people in the Western society basically judge women who decide to become a Muslim and where the hijab without even trying to find out the reason why they wear it. I also found her argument that Muslim women wear the veil for many different reasons interesting because I always thought the women in Muslim culture are forced to wear the hijab. I thought women in Muslim cultures do not have a voice in the sense that they do as they are told. This view was a product of how wearing the hijab is portrayed in many television shows and in the media. The way Droogsma conducted her study by using the women personal stories it made the reader feel insightful because they could put themselves in the shoes of the Muslim…

It is a religious and political performance of their religious identity. Other Muslim women advocate that wearing moderate religious attire is an important move towards feminism, and believe that they are valued solely on the basis of merit and not on appearance. In fact, Imam Taha Hassane kindly explained that “to others, maintaining hijab is an act of resistance against Western politicians, scholars and activists. Why? Because they are demonstrating that feminism can be defined in various ways in different cultural and religious contexts” (Hassane).…

I just wished people wouldn’t associate the hijab with perfection. Because that assumption is far from the truth. I remember a friend I had in high school before she got to know me a lot better. Said that before meeting me she assumed that any woman who wore the hijab didn’t have much of a life or personality that they just went to school or work and came home. That they never went to the movies, amusement parks, listened to music, went to the gym, went shopping or had any favorite tv shows.…

Rik Bailey really took his time to differentiate between the stereotypes of Muslim women and what Islam revealed about women. Many western eyes portray Islam as oppressive towards its women. The stereotypes of Muslim women is they are covered from head to toe, housewife, abused by husband, practically a women with no rights. But, these views are expressed from a western television or newspaper point of view. This quote by Bailey really caught my eyes, “People with these views tend not to have really looked into Islam or read books on the subject, or even spoken about these issues with a Muslim.”…

    Oppression In Religion

I agree with both Kate and Emily in the matter of how Islam, and other religions, can be oppressive towards women. However, talking to women who wears either a hijab or a burqa, I have encountered women who find it empowering in their faith. I do not think you can generalise what is oppression in one culture compared to another, because there are different norms within each culture. What may seem oppressing in one culture may have the opposite effect in another. To go off of what Emily said, in the Western world women can dress more provocative than women of the non-Western world, which is not an issue in one culture but is in the other.…
