The typical American diet consists of refined flours, sugars, high fats, non-human mammalian milk and its products, and processed foods (Frassetto, Schloetter, Mietus-Synder, Morris, & Sebastian, 2009). Each diet fad takes one or two of these ingredients and focuses on eliminating them to improve health, lose weight and make a person feel better. Are these ingredients our ancestors consumed? How would eliminating all of the listed ingredients affect the human body? The Paleolithic diet is a diet that eliminates all the aforementioned ingredients, leaving a diet consisting of lean meats, egg, nuts, fresh fruits, and vegetables (Frassetto et al., 2009). The word Paleolithic is defined as being of or relating to the time during the early Stone Age when people made rough tools and weapons out of stone (Merriam-Webster website, 2015). During this time period, people consumed the plants, vegetation, and animals around them; what we know today as the Paleolithic diet.
