When painting, you generally need an idea of what you are going to paint, like a theme. Most artists base their artwork on something that is original, and has never been done before. Also, when formulating an idea for an artwork, you have to pick something that you know would be visually complex. If you are planning on selling the artwork, not only is it important to create artwork that you yourself find visually complex, but it is important to consider if someone else besides you will buy it. The work of art I chose to discuss this week is, Equestrian Portrait of King Phillip II (Michael Jackson), an oil on canvas painting done in 2010 by Kehinde Wiley. I chose this painting because Kehinde Wiley’s art interests me. When I first looked up some of his work I found that he has a signature style of remake classic paintings from the 17th century all the way up to the 19th century. But he adds his own twist to them. He gets innovative and incorporates African-American figures into his paintings as the focal point.…

I have chosen an art from the Realism and Romantic period for my project and will compare paintings by Jean-François Millet title The Gleaners and Eugène Delacroix title The Natchez. These two pictures have similar landscapes but hides the hardship and suffering whice have been shewed from the foreground of the paintings. Judging from the pictures The Gleaner and The Natchez, it is fair to say that “Picture say a thousand words” but hides the true story. The Gleaner painting was created in 1857 and the foreground of the photos shows three women in the field planting or harvesting crops and a beautiful landscape.…

A word which implies that “art is synonymous with living, functional purpose, and spiritual simplicity” (Walkup). Zen Art is by its nature spiritual as it was “done not by professional artists, but by Zen monks and nuns who spent extremely disciplined lives of meditation, in a search for enlightenment and awakening to the true nature of reality”(Sweet). The core foundation of the art-form is the belief that the true character as well as the level of spiritual realization of the monk or nun were transposed into the painting itself. The painting style employed in Katach was very quick and evocative, as its main focus was on the inherent nature of the aesthetic…
