They were fed rabbit blood that was kept at a temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. This temperature was maintained because the blood was immersed in a water bath that circulated. The membrane that was used for the blood to be sucked through was a parafilm-membrane. The selected bugs were kept at a controlled humidity and temperature. These bugs were tested at different stages of life as listed: species of both male and female adults and nymphs that were at third and fourth phase of molting.…
Did research on what males and females look like. We observed the frozen flies. On the first week we used fly nap as an anesthetic for the flies and waiting for them to fall asleep. We sexed the flies and put 10 male and 10 female into a tube.…
The purpose of this experiment is to quantify the air quality and emissions of a local Nacogdoches Tadarida brasiliensis, Brazilian Free-Tailed bat colony. Concentration of ammonia, particulate matter, fungi and bacteria were measured to assess air quality. The guano at the base of the garage was also analyzed for nitrogen and carbon content. The colony briefly lived in the north end of parking garage on East College Street and Raguet Avenue until its untimely removal. The colony could be seen primarily in the upper two floors of the side column.…
She tested if the survivorship of T.cassandra is controlled by the extrinsic factors dehydration and predation. She did this in a few stages, first testing larval survivorship by comparing the number of scars present, indicating eggs under the surface of the flower, to the number of mature larvae. She then conducted a flower microclimate experiment in which mesh bags were placed over individual plants to determine if abiotic (non-living) factors were important in relation to the survival of genomes. Measurements were taken on the changes in microclimate, in relation to temperature and relative humidity. The impact of larval feeding was recorded; measured by number of larvae per fruit and the number of seeds consumed by each larva.…
Panda Express: Consider four bugs and their habitats. In temporary ponds we can find Green and Red Bugs, in permanent rivers we can find Orange and Blue bugs. The Green and Red bugs are food to fish and salamanders, but the Orange and Blue are unpalatable to both fish and salamanders. Salamander larvae are never found in the presence of fish and are quite palatable to fish. (a) Design an experiment that would reveal whether the larvae of each Bug “Species” can detect and respond to the presence of a predator (b) Why would the bugs choose either temporary ponds or permanent rivers to lay eggs based on the experience with…
Joan Mitchell’s Chamonix 1962 painting appears to be a mess at first glance; paint violently pushed across canvas, no focal point and seemingly just no point to this piece. However, by giving a name to this abstract mess, we are able to begin to use our imagination to begin to see shapes take form to see that Mitchell has made an abstraction of a French mountain and it is our job as a viewer to use our minds to make a story of her canvas. Mitchell’s 200 by 217.2cm canvas overtakes your vision the second you step in front of it. As you stare at all the paint splattered in the middle of the painting, you begin to notice that it’s not just a mess of paint. Mitchell didn’t do a ‘Jackson Pollock’ and slap paint on the canvas.…
Metabolism is a complex process in organisms that convert the food into energy for organism to function properly. Metabolic rate is typically defined as the amount of energy the organism is currently using to maintain the activity (Perkin, 2015). Since metabolism is a key in sustaining the organisms’ life, we decided to investigate the experiment about metabolic rate caterpillar, Manduca sexta. There are many techniques used to measuring the metabolic rate, but there are only best method that can be done in laboratory: “quantification of heat production and quantification of gas consumption” (Perkin, 2015).Our investigation is about measuring the oxygen consumption of the caterpillar in the trial duration when it was placed in sealed chamber along with chemical absorbing CO2 produced. Metabolism are mostly varies in each different organisms, therefore, a question for our investigation to what factor affect the metabolic rate in animal, especially in Manduca sexta.…
The name of the artwork is Art Beauty Shoppe, 1934, by Isaac Soyer and is a 42” x 49” oil on canvas, created in New York City. It is currently exhibited at the Dallas Museum of Art. Soyer discovers meaning and beauty in any place he goes. His goal as an artist was to describe human beings and everything that is around him at that moment in an admirable way. This painter used some of his childhood friends in this art piece, which is the woman in the foreground getting a manicure and the man, in the brown outfit, sitting down at the right of the background.…
Because the experiment takes place in a laboratory, Baumrind argues that participants will not act how they might in the real world. She states that the laboratory is an unaccustomed setting for a typical being and may cause anxiety and passivity (225). Correspondingly, Saul Mcleod, a psychologist who summarizes and critiques Milgram’s experiment, states that the “important” location of the experiment, obedience levels increased (Simply Psychology). The point about setting is one in which Baumrind and Parker are able to reach a consensus.…
A top government honey bee researcher from South Dakota says he's being rebuffed for publicizing work on pesticides and pollinators. Jonathan Lundgren's exploration discovered honey bees and ruler butterflies can be hurt by a generally utilized class of bug sprays. In an informant case recorded Wednesday, the United States Agriculture Department entomologist claims he confronted striking back due to his examination. "When he began distributed this work, he went from brilliant kid to untouchable, and that is the thing that this case is about," said Jeff Ruch, official executive of the Washington, D.C.- based gathering Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, which is speaking to Lundgren in his protestation to a government informant…
There was also a significant reduction in the number and size of offspring that emerged. Female offspring exposed to 10 mg of the beverage showed a reduction in reproductive output, as well as a 17% reduction in lifespan. In addition, the researchers found 10 mg of green tea led to morphological abnormalities in reproductive organs of the fruit flies, including atrophy in the testicles and ovaries. Green tea was found to protect the flies against dehydration, but it also increased susceptibility to heat stress and starvation.…
This next scenario is more complicated and involves plants, insects, parasitoids and humans. The tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) feeds on various species of the Solanale order which includes eggplants, potatoes, peppers, nightshades, tomatoes, petunias and of course, tobacco (Nicotiana attenuate). The larvae are defoliators and eat almost all of the leaves on a plant including fruit and blossoms. The larvae fill a different niche from their adult counterparts which feed on nectar. However, 70%-90% of foliage consumption is during the final instar.…
The effects of smoking on human health are serious and in many cases can even cause death. The fact is that cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, including 43 known cancer-causing compounds and 400 other toxins. These encompass nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, and arsenic. The ingredients in cigarettes affect everything from the internal function of organs to the efficiency of the body’s immune system. The most common health effects from smoking are; lung diseases(i.e.…
“Cigarettes smoking is the leading avoidable cause of death worldwide” (Susan 88). Although this long paper roll of tobacco lessens stress and helps improve concentration, it has been the cause of several grating diseases and has a great impact on people's health. It contains over seven-thousand chemicals including cancer-causing chemicals and poisonous gases that not only affect smokers but nonsmokers as well because of secondhand smoke. These chemicals in cigarettes such as tar stain smokers teeth and make them look older in age. Cigarettes also hurt the environment by polluting the earth.…
