Pain is defined as “a physical and sensory discomfort that causes suffering that affects an individual’s quality of life” (Lewis, Dirksen, Heitkemper and Camera, 2014). And like every individual, pain is perceived differently regardless of the age. For a newborn(neonates) who is born before 48 weeks, they are exposed to greater pain sensitivity and intensity due to inability to control the pain process (Hatfield, 2014). A preterm who is placed into the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are at severe risk for pain because they are commonly predisposed to multiple procedures and treatments due to a severity of complications (Perry, Hockenberry, Lowdermilk and Wilson, 2013, p.710-711). In short, a preterm neonate can be exposed to at least 20 different painful procedures during their stay. (Carbajal et al, 2008). A common procedure is a heel lance, it is “a number of newborn blood tests, including newborn screening” (Perry et al, 2014, p.657). It is a painful procedure that takes blood from the capillaries of the neonate’s heel for blood testing (Perry et al, 2013). Therefore, when one is exposed to this repetitively, it is important to monitor the neonate’s pain and ensure they are receiving adequate pain management as it can hinder the amount of stress when they are exposed to throughout their stay. If the pain is not managed, the stress can put the neonate at risk for permanent adverse changes in physiological, developmental and…
