Health care facilities are consistently looking for new ways to improve patient satisfaction in all aspects of the hospital experience (Gebremedhn, Chekol, Amberbir, & Flatie, 2015). Patient satisfaction is important for both improving patient recovery and for improving hospital ratings and overall atmosphere of the facility (Gebremedhn et al., 2015). Because of this, hospital staffs are considering different ways to ameliorate the experience of patients, especially in the aspect of pain relief in anesthesiology. Anesthesiology is the practice of medicine dedicated to pain relief. Health care professionals are currently studying further the role of anesthesiology in improving patient satisfaction. With the importance …show more content…
I am choosing these types of studies to explore the relationship between pain management and patient satisfaction. I will also use previously found data to compare with data I will collect myself. My population will be anesthesiology patients at WellStar Cobb Hospital. According to Diane Glowacki, an RN, MSN, CNS, and CNRN-CMC, self-reported patient pain assessments seem to be an important component in administering proper pain relief and providing adequate pain management (2015). Although healthcare professionals have been using the pain assessment scale for years, the pain assessments subjectivity is a common complaint (Glowacki, 2015). Such subjectivity is a limit to improving proper pain management in patients and the information on the quality and standard of the patient's experience (Glowacki 2015). I will be focusing on more common procedures of anesthesia as my focus of pain assessment. According to Ong, Lirk, Seymour, and Jenkins (2005), some specific procedures of anesthesia best for this kind of study includes epidural analgesia, local anesthetics, and other procedures such as nerve blocks. I will be conducting a survey consisting of previously published survey questions regarding the pre-operation and post-operation pain ratings of the patient, the procedure of anesthesia the patient will undergo, the pre-operation and post-operation pain complaints, and the amount of medicine needed to relieve patient pain during recovery. The variables I will be comparing are the pain scale values, the actual pain complaints, and the methods of pain management and anesthesia
