The American Dream What truly is the American Dream? According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the American Dream is defined as “The belief that everyone in the US has the chance to be successful and happy if they work hard”. There are many Americans that have successfully achieved their version of the American Dream. One of those people is a man by the name of Chris Gardner. Chris Gardner was someone who was a single father and lived a very impoverished life. Another person who achieved the American Dream was Helen Keller. Helen Keller is a girl who got a fever when she was young and went permanently deaf, and blind because of it. Finally, another person who successfully achieved the American Dream was Paige Rawl. Her positive attitude helped her realize that she was a normal kid just like everyone else, despite what others said (Rawl and Benjamin 221). She felt that because HIV doesn’t define her, that she could do so much more than what she was doing already (Rawl and Benjamin 221). From that point on, Paige decided to share her story and hope that somehow, it would benefit someone in the world (“Paige Rawl” par.6). This positive attitude helped her go even further on her journey to finding an end to bullying. All these people have gone through obstacles that could have set them back, but they did not let the obstacles defeat them. Instead, they developed qualities that would push them into achieving their main goals. Chris Gardner went from being impoverished, to being someone who owns his own company, and him being determined to have a good career, and study that career is what made him into the successful businessman he is today. Helen Keller lost her hearing and sight at a young age, and through her use of determination, she was able to communicate with others like she always wanted to. And finally, Paige Rawl was a girl who was born HIV positive. She always had a good attitude about life, and that good attitude allowed her to turn her hard situation into something that could benefit others (“Paige Rawl” par.6). All three of these people obtained the American Dream because they always had their eyes on their goal. They never let any obstacle stop them from being what they wanted to be.
