Paid In The Film Industry

The film industry is one of the biggest industries in the United States. It rakes in a huge amount of money each year, in 2014 alone it made around 564 billion dollars. Even though the industry as a whole is very large, some films are considered commercial flops. One reason that this may be is that there was not enough advertising for the film. A few other factors may be release date, star power, critical reviews and word of mouth, its connection to existing franchises or books, and the film’s rating. A final reason that this may be is that the studio put way so much money in the films budget that it would be almost impossible to make its much of a profit.

During the 1930’s the decline started. The major central producers, Irving Thalberg and Darryl F. Zannuck, had built such highly efficient operations in their studios that there was no need for micromanaging. This made them more figureheads than anything else. What makes a successful movie? Is it the storyline, the characters in the movie, the music playing during pivotal moments, or is it the actors that are taking place in the movie? There were three smaller studios close behind: Universal, Columbia, and United Artists (the Little Three). One of the ways the ‘Big Five’ made a lot of profit was through block booking. Like a patchwork quilt, the films and literature found in American culture incorporate, to some extent, elements from other movies, books, and even mythological and historical figures and events. George Lucas and his Star Wars films provide a prime example of a film that is a pastiche of various other films, while also serving as a cache of inspiration for future filmmakers. Such inspiration was needed at a time when the film industry had little direction because of the influence of big business and Wall Street along with the disintegration of the Motion Picture Production Code. In fact, Star Wars was one of the films that marked the beginning of a new era in film: the postmodern period. Even today, about forty years after the release of the…
