Pai Ihimaera's The Whale Rider

Improved Essays
Have you ever thought how interesting it was how Pai, a young girl in the book, was able to communicate with the whale alone? It’s wonderful how Pai was able to do it after everyone else has tried, but they didn’t succeed. To begin, I will be talking about a book, the title of this book is called “The Whale Rider”. Witi Ihimaera is the author for The Whale Rider. The summary of The Whale Rider is about a young girl, named Pai, who wants to be chief. But her Grandfather, Koro Apirana, wanted a male chief for his tradition. Pai wanted to show Koro how strong she was so he could love her. But Koro always rejected Pai just because she’s a girl. Pai later proves herself to Koro at the near end of the book. Pai had overcome the odds to achieve greatness, this was the theme I chose to write about. Without the theme, “overcoming the odds to achieve greatness”, she would never have been able to face the challenges she had to go through and will never achieve what she fights for the most, Koro accepting her. It’s amazing how this theme helped her throughout the book.

Pai was able to save the whole tribe by using one of the themes that I chose, overcoming the odds to achieve greatness. I chose that theme because it really fits into the action, it concludes the end of the trouble she had gone through, and what she had earned after doing all that. The way Pai says she was not afraid to die means she had the strength to try and be brave, which can help her be stronger. Pai once never talked to a whale before, and when she was singing to it, the whale listened to her. My final thought on the theme that I chose is that how the theme really helps Pai save her tribe and the whales. I think that the theme I chose was the best one because it really did help her and I was able to put it in the essay. And I would say that I am really proud of the theme that I

The first theme is standing up for what matters to you. The author, Ria Voros, communicates her theme effectively by showing this in the main character as she stands up for what matters to her. An example in the text is when she stood up for james by making posters. It mentioned in the story what poster she was making “I speak to no one, hunch over my computer, type, cut/paste, download and with all the artistic talent I possess, create” (pg.182). This shows that she is standing up for her friend by using her artistic talent to show everyone that James was something to her.…

The theme for my storyboard for the book Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman was about helping out in the community that you are in. I picked this theme because in Seedfolks all of the characters put in effort to help make the garden a better place. All of the characters had something against someone but they get involved in the garden because the either notice how the garden community were kind and helpful or they were forced to go by someone who thinks the garden will help their problems. The Character Sae Young is the main character in my storyboard. Sae Young worked in a laundromat, but one day at work a man came in with a gun under his coat and beat up Sae Young and she passed out because he kicked her really hard.…
