Falaye (2013) writes, “Biblical counselling follows the Bible and seeks to minister the love of the true and living God, whose love deals with sin and produces obedience” (p 56). Otherwise, distrust and misunderstanding will always be the result. Fouque and Glachan (2000) explain, “Even a Christian, who engages in a healing relationship without the skills necessary to recognize these powerful processes, can fail to maintain the integrity of the therapeutic encounter” (p. 205). The author further explains a second idea, “There is concern that many Biblical counsellors may be working outside their competence without adequate training or appropriate supervision” (Fouque & Glachan, 2000, p. 205). Our internal conversation can give us the comfort we need. Of course, it must contain the words of God. A counselor can point you towards the scripture or let you explain your wrought points of view before you give them to your colleagues or your family. However, they must themselves seek the restoration of their hearts too. First Corinthians 12:8 (NIV) records, “To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit” this is the work of the Holy Spirit in the relationship of counseling.
