The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus Research Paper The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus is very much like us humans. They have eyes comparable to ours, and they are also smart and inquisitive beings like us too. The suckers they use to examine and eat their prey is powerful, with each of their arms being described as sensory organs rather than limbs. These creatures can be found on the west coast of North America. The octopuses live in the temperate rain forests, and would prefer to be resting in pooled water than drying out (Vocabulary.com). These cephalopods reach an average size of 30-33 cm. The creatures are in danger of becoming extinct (Zapato). The Tree Octopus is thought to have originated in the roots of Puget Sound, and that is where its reproductive cycle began. They leave their homes and begin to travel to Olympic National Forest every year to start mating. They migrate towards the shore, and eventually to their spawning grounds in Hood Canal. This is where they find mates and congregate. It is the only real social time of their lives. They are not quite extinct, but Lyle Zapato, the author of the blog, Save the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus thinks that it should be added to the list of endangered species because it is at a risk right now of becoming extinct. If these creatures are on the endangered species list, they can take the action of trying to preserve and protect them. The reasons for the Tree Octopus on the verge of extinction include: the critically low number for its breeding needs, destruction of habitat, and because they are being hunted for prey. The few that make it to the Canal are further hurt in their reproduction from the excessive pollution problems in the air from farming and residential run-off
